About:
Jpedal (Java PDF Extraction and Decoding Library) is a pure Java library to extract content from Adobe's PDF file format and to rasterize this content. It has both open source and commercial versions. The open source version supports embedded TrueType fonts, and there is an additional file to add full font support that is available under an AFPL license.

[»] misleading
by tmber - Oct 1st 2004 02:27:30

According to the feature chart on the official JPedal site, only commercial/closed-source versions of the library support many of the features that the Freshmeat project description claims; the open source version is only a viewer and does not even support TrueType or T1 fonts according to the developer. The Freshmeat project description doesn't mention the existence of a commercial license at all. Based on those observations, my impression is that the project is nearly useless in its open source form and that the developer is deliberately misclassifying it on Sourceforge in order to attempt to direct potential customers to their site.

Most people attracted via freshmeat would never be commercial clients in our experience, making such behaviour a total waste of time.

The text on the freshmeat site is now 3 years old so does not reflect ongoing changing in the library. It is virtually impossible to keep all mentions of such a library fully updated all across the internet. So we try to refer people to 1 site.

As you say, there is a features matrix making it very clear what the version does and does not do and we have now updated the description.

It should be clear from the fact that we go to the effort to have a GPL version with a clear market position and run an online forum for users (where we answer any questions), that you are doing us an injustice.

If you had raised this on the forums, we would have resolved it immediately. Does make me wonder why we bother sometimes.

We have now updated the freshmeat description, which you are welcome to comment on.
