Hi!Great linux cd.It is the only one out of knoppix, morphix, and technomancer live cd linux' that worked with my nvidia 3d card.Awesome.
I am new to linux and have used only slackware a little.I am wondering if this "cool linux" can be installed completely to hard drive and then not require any CD to use.I did see install to HDD using first 64 mb option. However I am not sure what that means entirely.I hope I am making sense. Thanks in advance.

[»] Screen resolution and refresh rate problem
by TheClon - Dec 18th 2003 07:03:11

Hi,

I just installed cool linux 2.3, but am having problems with the screen resolution and refresh rate autodetected.

It starts at 1024x768 (virtual) on 640x480 real, so I can't see all the screen content at once, and the refresh rate is at 60Hz.

I tried setting the screen at boot time on 640x480, but then the desktop gets crowded too fast... and the refresh rate stays at 60Hz.

Could you please help this Linux newbie fix this little but frustrating problem?

Andy. He/she/you doesn't anger the script install-hdd to work, because the installation files are different from the files of the CD of Coll-Linux.

Hm, you not edit initrd* files from /boot/isolinux on CD? You not rename some files? fs.img created over squashfs? You not change kernels from CD?

I can send to you me all project files without ./rootfs directory.

I copied the directory directly of the CD, I just modified the files of the fs.img in a separate directory and soon after I used the mksquashfs to create the fs.img again. Then I used the mkisofs generating the image of the cd. If it can me to send the files of the project I would thank.

Ups, sorry. I remember now. :)
fs.img is squashfs filesystem. I.e. - read only filesystem. You need first copy all files on real hard drive directory and recreate fs.img. You can do it with command "mksquashfs ./rootfs ./CD/live/fs.img -noappend".

" libc and libc6 " and more... -> Dependence of the file mksquashfs.
I got to install and to use the mksquashfs in Red-Hat 7.3. When I went to compile, the error message " isolinux.boot " could not find.

Hm. I don't know swedish language and I don't know how this include in linux. If you found description of swedish localization - send URL to my.
But best way - create needed (with correct swedish support) /etc/sysconfig/i18n, /etc/sysconfig/keyboard and /ect/X11/XF86Config files and send to my - I include swedish language support in next version of Cool Linux CD.

    1. Sorry - news version work going very slowly. :(
I begin this work on RedHat8, but I stop it, becouse in RH8 very many multimedia soft no present and I can not compile this. :(
Now I install Mandrake 9.1 and test this. This is good disr. I think, in first time I create minidistro on 180 Mb CDR based on Mandrake 9.1 with many kernels (including Wolk-server and may be Wolk-workstation kernels for i386, i686 and Athlon architect).
    2. I include many new kernels and I think this problem may be fixed.

    1. This is winmodem. For work it needed drivers. But I don't know how you can install this drivers on CD.
    2. This CD have not Gnome or KDE. This include kdelib and gnomelib. On versions 2.x present only IceWM window manager. But in next version I include Gnome2 (from RH8).
    3. Yes - clcd include wine. I test this with Counter Strike and this is worked.
    4. I not certain in java correctly worked.
    5. Hm. Why "rar"? For savecfg (on floppy!!!) used tar and gzip. Not rar! When you run savecfg you config save to floppy. And when you boot, you can answer "y" on question about load config from floppy.

You can install clcd on your hdd, but this is NOT safety! My install script not detect previosly installed systems.

You can use wine, but for CS (or other 3D shuters) needed OpenGL 3D video drivers for fast work. Best way - Nvidia cards (clcd include firmware nvidia drivers). For run you can enter "wine ./cs.exe" (or "wine ./hl.exe") in CS directory.

In next version of clcd I include java support.

Will your "install script" use lilo and write it to MBR? If there exist lilo I know how to use two OS in one machine. If you will include java in next version,I do think clcd will be perfect distro. Sorry, one version of clcd have this bug. Before run install script you need mount /mnt dir to rw filesystem (in /dev/shm/mnt). Command for this (after create /dev/shm/mnt if not exist): "mount -o bind /dev/shm/mnt /mnt".

[»] saving config?
by Young Matt - Mar 4th 2003 14:37:39

Uncle Andy,

First, Cool Linux is exactly what it says! Great. I need to be able to run Linux on machines on which Linux can't be permanently installed.

However, it makes me reconfigure every time I boot of the CD-ROM. I get the impression there is a way to save a configuration, but I can't for the life of me figure out how.

Please, can you help?

If you have Cool Linux CD version 2.01, then this is very easy. In this version you can save config on second or other track of multisession CD. You can found documantation about this in http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/emergencycd2/SAVE-OPTIONS.TXT?download
Also you can save configs on floppy used command "savecfg".

[»] config option for cool linux CD 2.01
by Andrei Mircea - Feb 3rd 2003 12:55:03

I liked very much your CD and stored my config on floppy succesfully. However after writing it under a /conf directory in second session on the CD, the CD did not work any more. It boots but then it says kernel panic, cannot find init.
Another point : the option of saving things in /dev/hda1 also did not work for me. I have a vfat partition (Windows 98) there with plenty of room though.
Except for these two points everything went very smooth, including the X11 configuration and I enjoy exploring this CD.
One more suggestion maybe: why not add other keyboards in the besides english and russian, they are present on the CD anyway. I found a satisfactory way to add my own (fr_CH) on the floppy config but it would have been nice to be able to chose it from a list.

    1. May by you save second session wrong? For this you need save _and_first_ and second session in multisession mode. I.e. without close session.

    2. I will check save config on hdd.

    3. I think about any locales in boot menu. But I cannot test this becose I do not know ather langiges. :(

This kernel is standart kernel 2.4.19 (from kernel.org) with SGI XFS filesystem patch only.
But you can use this config with kernel 2.4.19 without XFS patch.

It seems that you have added four users in Coollinux, but can you login the system with those users, besides root?

the problem i met is that i can creat users, but when i tried logging in, it said: this account is temporarily unavailable. What's wrong?

9:38pm up 14 days, 4:54, 3 users, load average: 2.27, 2.20, 2.17

There is the Cool Linux 2.01 uptime on this box. Pretty cool eh?

Two questions tho, why no java support and no nfs support to connect as a client. That would be cool then you could use Cool Linux as a thin client :D

Cheers

You install Cool Linux on HDD or work from CD? :)
About java - on CD present Java VM (whereis java, whereis javac). And what also need for java work?
If I will have more time, I add nfs support.

No HDD install.... It is faster for me this way
      16x DVD 512MB RAM PII 350
      Works Great.

Java support for mozilla is not working :(
I will be waiting for the next version of Cool Linux that has nfs client support. Don't need server support, unless you think it is required.

Opera likes to crash, maybe upgrading it to a new version would be a good idea?

      Cheers

        1. How I can check java in mozilla? What URL with java, where mozilla not work?
        2. What need for nfs-client support? Additional rpm or kernel recompile with nfs suppot (I not work with nfs and don't know this)?
        3. On Cool Linux CD 2.01 present 2 versions of opera - 6.03 and 6.10. See /tmp/opera symlink. You can change this on other version (files - "opera-6.03" and "opera-6.10").

[»] 1.44 floppy image to boot MINI (Emergency) Cool Linux CD ?
by rts101 - Dec 8th 2002 07:20:37

Hello,

I would like to use the "Emergency CD v2.0 MINI" CD with bootable 1.44MB floppy disk (some systems just don't boot from CD even though their BIOS seems to support this), but the CD/image contains only 2.88 MB floppy image. I've tried the floppy image from "Cool Linux CD 2.00" (which is 1.44MB), but it looks for different ISO image in "live" directory to mount...

Do you have a 1.44 MB boot floppy image also for "Emergency CD v2.0 MINI" CD ?
If not, how can I create one ?

Thank you for your time.

Radomir.
