by hefty - Sep 15th 2005 09:16:43

Hi,

have anyone of you ever used jTDS as a bridge from SAP-XI 3.0 to an MS SQL 7.0 database?
Any comments on this?

[»] Original BSD license?
by Kreiger - Mar 24th 2004 06:00:16

This great piece of software being under an original-BSD-like license with an obnoxious advertising clause is just sad.

Are you referring to the advertising clause in the license? If that's the case, we got rid of it (as much as the old license allowed) by changing the license to LGPL.

    Happier? ;o)

You mean i *don't* have to put "This product includes software developed by CDS Networks, Inc." in my advertising materials, as per the license on http://jtds.sourceforge.net/license.html ?
In that case i'm very happy indeed(!), but if not, why still keep that on the page? A clarification would be nice.

Well, it's not my choice. You see I "inherited" this project together with the copyright notice and unless I rewrite it from scratch (which I obviously won't) you and I will have to live with it.

I would have excluded it from the license page but I'm just as powerless as you are.

        Sorry,
        Alin.

The problem is that it is contradictory. The BSD-like-license of the code is incompatible with the (L)GPL. See http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#OrigBSD.

This means that you can't go through with the relicensing to LGPL, because that would make it impossible for both you and me to distribute the code while complying with both the LGPL and the original license.

Ooops! Had no idea about this.

This means that I will have to talk to the original author and ask for his permission. Hope this works out right.

How is the relicensing faring? I would very much like to be able to use and distribute jTDS.

Well, in case you're still interested, one of the guys rewrote the driver almost completely so we decided that it's ok to go with LGPL and completely drop the old license.

That's great! When will that version be out?

The new, rewritten version is out. It's much more stable than the 0.8.x releases and has a lot less bugs. Alin.

That's wonderful. I've tried it out, and it seems to work great!

Will you update your license page now?

It's already updated. We chose to leave the original license there as a "thank you" for the original developer, but as explained in the page, it's just that. You don't have to comply with it or anything.

                        Alin.

                          Ah, i understand now.
                          However, that's not very clear.
If i were curious about the jTDS license, i'd click on "License", move my eyes to what looks like a license, and say "Non-revised BSD-like license. Too bad, can't use it."

Please don't take this as criticism, it's just how i see the page.

Thanks for great work on this driver. I'll be using it in the next version of my project.

                            Kreiger,

After just 9 months from when this thread started I can proudly declare the BSD license is gone. :o)

Sorry it took so long, but now all that's left is a mention of the original developer and license. Thanks for not losing interest completely.

                            Alin.

No, thank you for this great driver. Am using it in imCMS 2.0 which is due for release in a couple of weeks. Gave us a nice speed boost over the Microsoft driver, and being LGPL means we can ship it with imCMS!

                              Thank you very much!
