About:
JBoss is an Open Source, standards-compliant, Enterprise JavaBeans application server implemented in pure Java. JBoss provides JBossServer, the basic EJB container and JMX infrastructure, JBossMQ for JMS messaging, JBossMail for mail, JBossTX for JTA/JTS transactions, JBossSX for JAAS based security, JBossCX for JCA connectivity, and JBossCMP for CMP persistence. It integrates with Tomcat Servlet/JSP container and Jetty Web server/servlet container, and enables you to mix and match these components through JMX by replacing any component you wish with a JMX-compliant implementation for the same APIs. The goal is to provide a full J2EE stack in the Free/Open Source software world.

[»] Poor software
by Marcus - Feb 13th 2004 09:28:24

No free documentation, I cannot get examples to work, even examples from the documentation I paid for.
The init phase when launching jboss is very very long and verbose. Errors are poorly reported with stange messages and useless (or wrong !) informations.
Benchmarks I found report the scalability is bad compared to other J2EE products, and overall performance is poor. Bad integration with popular developper tools.
I cannot recommend this product !

Target audience: This class is not recommended for beginning Java programmers.

Content:You will learn how to fine tune JBoss in production, what advanced J2EE architectures are suited for JBoss, you will go deep into the architecture of JBoss from the JMX base to the MBean Containers, to the invokers to the smart proxies. You will learn the deep integration points in JBoss and how to extend development to fit into your own solutions. The goal is for you to understand the super-server theory and how JBoss applied it to the JBoss core server. From this point it is fairly trivial for you to understand how to build your own real-life strand of EJB that fits your particular need. From client side cache to clustering and real-world security, we teach you "beyond J2EE" and how to quickly and simply solve your own middleware problems by using JBoss and the super-server theory in this practical, example oriented, hands-on presentation. The advanced class is targeted at consultants who will provide JBoss Group services to end clients as well as internal IT developers and ISV developers. Come meet your peers and the JBoss core people, in an intense, unique and challenging experience.

[»] I use JBoss at work, it works well
by Drig - Aug 21st 2001 11:37:00

I've used WebLogic, JBoss and Enhydra at work as a
Java developer. We've ended up going with JBoss.
Enhydra's J2EE support was still in Alpha (and
had alpha-level bugs). WebLogic is expensive.
JBoss functions well (we've found no serious bugs)
and is free-as-in-freedom and free-as-in-beer.
Having the source meant that we were able to add
our own random seeding routines to the SSL
handler. We were also able to use the source to
help debug our own application.

I would recommend JBoss to anyone thinking of
running a J2EE app server.

-Dave Rudder
