[»] New release? yeah.. sure...
by Ste - Jan 27th 2004 15:09:12

AGP still doesn't work on my KT400 Via board... and the console is still just as unusable after leaving X.

I wonder if any fixes actually made it in.....

[»] Does Neverwinter Nights work again yet?
by Trejkaz Xaoza - Jan 27th 2004 14:48:11

So does anybody know if they've fixed the problem with Neverwinter Nights that the previous driver had? There's no point me upgrading from 4496 until there is a version which actually works with the only OpenGL program I regularly run, and they have no recognisable message about this in the README...

... actually you know what's weird? I have 4496 installed right now, on kernel 2.6, and everything works fine.

[»] linux kernel 2.6.x support?
by barrett9h - Dec 22nd 2003 11:12:22

So, when will they release a driver update for the new 2.6.0 kernel?
It shouldn't be hard to do, just some interface changes (I supose..)

http://www.minion.de/ has patches to make various drivers work, I've had success with them so far...

Look at minion.de for the patches needed. In ALT Linux's 2.6.0 package set, that's integrated among other things.

[»] "tarballs still provided"?
by Michael Shigorin - Apr 2nd 2003 01:32:59

If NVIDIA folks do read this, I'd like to note that placing statements like:

---
For the 1.0-4349 release, NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX
src.rpms and tarballs are still provided. However, these will not
be provided for future releases.
---

in ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4349/README.txt is no good idea (then put it into announce?), but still better than the message itself.

Why it was decided that way? Since more sane redistribution policy was implemented, some distros began shipping the drivers thus letting users to have NVIDIA support out-of-box along with ATI support, and now you're breaking it.

And no, the world doesn't end with RH/SuSE/Mdk.

And yes, we could possibly cope with unpacking the .run, but why break what's working?

(the copy of this will go to linux-bugs@, though it's definitely not a "linux bug")

Thanks for decent drivers, albeit closed, but please take into account your co-operators on the driver delivery.

by Dr. Blackfeld - Nov 27th 2001 05:48:25

Has _anyone_ out there gotten this card to work with Mandrake 8.0 or Slack 8? ANYONE?

If you have a clue - send me a note - DrBlackfeld@boundariez.com.

I have it working on Slack 8 on various kernels (2.4.18-ac3 now). I just rpm --rebuild --nodeps the two srpms. All the info you need is in the readme.

FWIW, there's a thread about Mandrake 8.2 on Nvidia's site here.

[»] XFree 4.x and Nvidia drivers (1.0-1541) block access to console screen
by Michael Conrad - Nov 4th 2001 03:37:16

I actually enjoyed the new Nvidia drivers,
especially the part for 3D-support
(Tux racer gets very funny)! :-)

Nevertheless I have a problem when shutting down from a KDE-2 session: I could not switch to the console screen anymore (i.e. with CTRL-ALT-F1 e.g.); the KDE X-Window login screen stays...

I have this side-effect with SuSE 7.2 since I installed the Nvidia drivers.

[»] Memory consumption
by Gunnar Braun - Sep 10th 2001 03:07:39

The NVIDIA drivers seem to require a lot more memory
than the (unaccelerated) XFree driver. Instead of
15-20 MB, X now uses about 220 MB RAM. At least,
there seems to be no memory leak as is the previous
release, which caused X to hang up after running a
couple of days. Anyway, wouldn't dare to use a
number >0 as major version number.

It's not true. The memory seems to be reported, but X isn't actually using this memory out of main RAM. It's the video card's RAM being mapped in. AFAIK, the entire video memory gets mapped in at least twice, hence the huge reported memory uage.

So it counts the video memory twice

[»] They should release more often
by Carlos Rodrigues - May 20th 2001 00:01:44

Nvidia seems to be releasing XFree drivers every two months. I guess they should release more often, at least some really-unstable-may-not-work-at-all labeled versions. This would improve user feedback to them and bugs would be squashed faster.

[»] No, it works with a Geforce 2 MX...
by Andrea Scrimieri - Jan 17th 2001 18:50:10

That driver (NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX) works with Geforce 2 MX, but you need XFree86 4.0.1 or later. You also need to read all docs :), but you can easily configure it reading FAQ at www.geforcefaq.com. I had some problems with kernel 2.4.0 final, but I'm working on it...

[»] No driver avaible for GeForce2 (MX) ?????
by squisher - Dec 17th 2000 07:10:50

I don't believe it... I had a geforce2mx for a couple of days and wanted to start x-windows. It does not work. This driver does not support those chips yet! It really sucks! What is going on? Geforce2 isn't that new anymore and NVidia didn't get to write a driver for it yet? That really is embarrasing. I'm very disappointed. The only way to convince the linux community that a closed source driver isn't all that bad is by giving good support for it and steadily developing and improving it. The current situation is exactly the opposit.

If you have issues with these drivers, the place to go is irc.openprojects.net:6667, #nvidia. Several nvidia employees working directly on these drivers hang around in there, and you can usually get information or submit bug reports with much more efficency this way. Icebalm also has an xdcc server with all the drivers plus more.

[»] nVidia wake up! Time to make your drivers as great as your hardware!
by xynopsis - Aug 6th 2000 11:12:56

I'm expecting a big improvement since 0.92 but was frustrated even more by release 0.94! I cant see any bug fix and X locks-up MORE FREQUENTLY when running some GL apps in this version (so much for the stability, I feel like im using windoze). I hope nVidia fixes this problem soon or open-source these drivers instead as an alternative.

[»] 0.9-4 ...sucks, badly, depending on kernel
by Don Johnson - Jul 18th 2000 11:14:04

the driver is much better for the 2.2 series than 2.4-test*.

It works, flakily, in the 2.4-test* series, yet is slow and clunky, GL has serious...issues(didn't work). Generally, tho, if you don't mind taking a big performance hit, discard any and all games and toys, and don't mind random crashings of X, go with this for 2.4...otherwise go like me and stay safe with your preferred 2.2 kernel.

Sour grapes to NV. I want a driver that's as good as the hardware! I doubt tho, if that's on their agenda.

[»] License?
by a - Jul 18th 2000 10:27:06

I'm not understanding this license. You can download the source RPM directly from their page, but doesn't that confilict with the license agreement earlier on the page? Specifically, these lines:
-----------------
2.1.2 Limitations.

No Reverse Engineering. Customer may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the SOFTWARE, nor attempt in any other manner to obtain the source code.
-----------------
3. TERMINATION.

This LICENSE will automatically terminate if Customer fails to comply with any of the terms and conditions of it. In such event, Customer must destroy all copies of the SOFTWARE and all of its component parts.
-----------------

Doesn't this mean that as soon as you download the source RPM, you have to delete it?

[»] 0.9-3... no bugfixes in sight
by Friedrich Delgado Friedrichs - Jun 15th 2000 23:10:25

Sorry folx, i sent an extensive bugreport to nvidia regarding 0.9-2 and i cannot see they fixed any of the bugs i submitted. I just experienced a hard-lockup under linux while switching between to X-Servers, and quake3 crashed on me earlier...

My bugreport was quite recently though, and i expect they did not have time to grok it fully yet.

[»] Version 1.0-1251, text mode becomes unusable after switching X textconsoles a few times

    > Sorry folx, i sent an extensive

    > i cannot see they fixed any of the bugs
    > i submitted.

I sent them a fully extensive bug report about 2 weeks ago, and they haven't responded yet. --PROBLEM#1:-- When switching back to my X session from a text console or another X, i get a black screen. The rest of the whole system seems to be functioning 100% fine, after killing it (ctrl alt backspc) or switching to a text console i still get a black screen, but i can "blindly" do anything i could normally, even start a new X session, which appears OK on screen. However, after exiting it, instead of standard textmode i just see the last graphic screen displayed, which cycle-scrolls towards the right when i press enter or type commands (which respond, according to disk activity) - it's just like the card is stuck in gfx mode and can't return to textmode until i reboot. --PROBLEM#2:-- In 3D the card seems to be only slightly faster than my Voodoo3 was on the exact same machine, at 640x480 or lower. At anything higher (800x600 and up) it's slow and choppy as hell.

New drivers (0.9-2) have much better framerates for Q3 :), but X crashes under WindowMaker when I switch workspaces. It's nice to be able to play Q3, but it's important to be able to work too... Anyone else out there having this problem?

I use WindowMaker with no problems. However, when
I leave my console for a while with xscreensaver
going, I come back sometimes to find X crashed.
