[»] Not updated since 2003
by Bob Shaffer II - Feb 20th 2007 18:38:54

This project hasn't been updated since 2003, it's built against old libraries, and even in 2003 it only had the bare minimum of features. It seems fairly clear that development for this project has ceased, and if you want to use Yahoo for IM your best bet is to go with Kopete or GAIM. Kopete is supposed to have audio/video chatting, but I can't seem to get it working, and GAIM works nicely and supports no audio or video chatting. Either of them work far better than the ancient linux version of Yahoo Messenger for connecting to Yahoo. It's too bad that the people at Yahoo have given up on us, but it seems like we must just accept it and move on.

[»] Webcam and voice support on unix please!
by Felix Mathais - May 25th 2004 16:15:32

I am using linux as my operating system of choice. and therefor feel left out as the lack of features compared to the windows version. I would love to see webcam support at least.
For tips have a look at ayttm.sourceforge.net, which has a webcam support for linux.
It would be nice to have it in the official client, please!!!

to heck with webcam and voice. how about dropping the Rpm's and using something like the loki installer or the installer from mozilla or open office so that it will work on ANY linux. I'm sitting here on Slackware and other than making a giant mess by trying to force an RPM to install there are no options. Come on Yahoo developers. either also release a tar.gz for me to manually install on the other 99 linux distros like you guys USED to do or adopt one of the nice installers and make everyone's life easier.. Oh, compile it statically like mozilla and Open Office and you will not have to worry about deps.

      I'm running slackware 10.1.
to install just type rpm -ivh --nodeps rh9.ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm

worked for me.. key was --nodeps.
I do agree, redhat & debian are not the only linux distros, and a standard installer (even just a shell script) should have been considered.

Well if you can't use a modern Linux setup, which almost all support RPMs either directly or through something like alien, then... just unpack the RPM. All an RPM is is a cpio archive with some embedded scripts. You can unpack it and manually install it the same as any zip or tar file.

[»] Voice support
by Jason M. Waldo - Jan 21st 2004 13:59:23

I really appreciate the effort on the part of Yahoo to provide some support for the community with the use of their messenger service, however, it would be greatly appreciated if voice support were added as soon as possible.

Just a note, if you are upgrading your SuSe installation, remove ymessenger first. There are problems with libcrypto that will cause all sorts of dependncy issues.

Otherwise, ymessenger rocks, especially the new file transfer capabilities. Thanks for playing nice w/ linux guys!

[»] Upgrade Announcement
by Thor - Sep 11th 2003 05:24:14

So this morning I check in to messenger and got an offline message to each of my accounts informing me that Yahoo is making system changes on September 24, 2003.

They then go on to tell me that I should download and run the latest version.

Don't waste your time, there isn't a new version.

Does anyone have the scoop on this? Are we (Unix users) going to get shut out on the 24th? Is there a new version comming out to address this?

Well, I'd like to give it a shot, but I'm running Red Hat 9, and after launching the client, it runs thru the configuration wizard, then segfaults, and when I run it again, it runs thru the configuration wizard, then segfaults AGAIN - over and over and over again. Back to gaim I guess.

you have an old .ymessenger directory in $HOME, move that out of the way and retry. And yes, if it is still bombing, please set ulimit -c unlimited, get a core and email to the group, I'll poke at the core. This is the first report of a seg fault with this series (1.0.x) ....

Okay - the core was pretty big - I emailed it - and guess what:
Your message was rejected by mta5.grp.scd.yahoo.com for the following reason: sorry, that message size exceeds my databytes limit (#5.3.4)
so, I'll put the core up on my site and email you the link - you can download it at your convenience.

I have the following problem with my yahoo
messenger. When I open the IM for the second

people write me. The font is very small. I have

happen. Someone have a solution for that

Deleting the .ymessenger file in the HOME directory and then restarting ymessenger fixes the font problem temporarily. It reoccurs on every other load-up. Could this be a problem with KDE? This is getting old!!!

[»] Re: How to fix on redhat 9
    by RunNHide - May 7th 2003 14:16:33

To address this issue, I re-packaged ymessenger for Red Hat 9. Please note that this is a totally unofficial release. I have also taken the liberty of replacing the crappy looking stock yahoo pixmaps with Red Hat Bluecurve-ish pixmaps. When you install it, use "rpm -Uvh --nodeps" otherwise it will complain that it needs libgtkhtml.so.20 and/or libcrypto.so.2 - these are both included in the package and properly linked. It's available at http://runnhide.cjb.net/RPMS/ymessenger-0.99.19-rh9.i386.rpm for those that would like to download it and try it out. After installing the RPM, just run /usr/bin/ymessenger just as you would with the normal "real" yahoo RPM.

    by romrider - May 8th 2003 21:21:09

This may not be the best solution but it works flawlessly under Mandrake 9.1 (bamboo) after you have run the program once and then exited it creates the .ymessenger folder and all I did was replaced $home/USER/.ymessenger/menu.rc with a blank menu.rc file and made it read only and not writeable. the program will forever more not be able to write the menu.rc file and for some reason that I am not aware of will be able to read and write text properly...

It does seem to solve the font problem, but I am having the following problem. I can receive messages from my buddy, but my buddy isn't receiving my messages. He sees me online, but does not receive my message.

I am pretty sure it's the problem at my end because when I use gaim there is no problem.

I have tried with all the different solutions found here and was able to resolve the small font problem, but not the current problem.

      I am running Mandrake 9.1.

[»] Red Hat 8.0 Font Issue
by lexus03 - Dec 3rd 2002 07:57:20

I'm having a problem with using ymessenger on Red Hat 8.0. I install the rpm and all goes well. I run it the first time and I can see the messages I type to others and messages other type to me. After I close the application for the first time, it writes ~/.ymessenger/<prefs and other stuff> files. When I run ymessenger again, I can no longer see messages I type to others nor can I see the messages they type to me. Is this a known issue?

    by Michael Shurtleff - Jan 14th 2003 12:46:38

I can confirm I am having the same problem. It does seem to be related to fonts, but the fact that it initializes correctly from the config routine would indicate that the problem is in the initialization routine on app start-up. It is probably a piece of cake to fix for the developers.. let's hope they correct it soon.

In the mean time I will be using Imici, which unfortunately doesn't have the stock quotes.

    rm -rf $HOME/.ymessenger/menu.rc
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH

[»] Webcam support?!?
by Rescue9 - Nov 12th 2002 08:55:44

Its always the case with unixes. We are the LAST to be supported by comercial software. Even Mac has webcam support now. I can understand there being a problem implementing webcam support for someone on a linux system who wants to broadcast their webcam. This is a resonable delay due to the completely different way that webcams are dealt with in linux. However, it is not understandable why you haven't built the ability for linux clients to view others webcams. This is something that should already be implemented. You all need to get on the ball. We, the linux community, want webcam support. WE are TIRED of always being the last ones to recieve support and features!

yes - I agree totally. We in the Unix/Linux community are the absolute last to get anything accomplished and webcam and voice support in an official yahoo client would be fantastic. I personally am sick of having to fire up a virtual machine to run windows in to be able to use this functionality in yahoo messenger, especially when I have a perfectly functioning webcam and sound card that I use under Linux. Maybe we should start some sort of petition to yahoo and get the ball rolling?

I don't honestly think that this would matter much. We just have to assume that the Windoze world loaths us and would rather not hear from us. There is a solution however....Forget relying on the windoze world to change for us and start relying on the linux community. There have eben multiple requests for the gaim project , gaim.sourceforge.net , to implement video and voice support for the yahoo protocol. It is simply a matter of finding the right developer in the linux community who also has a need for this support. Then maybe things will change. As we have seen here, we will almost certainly be waiting an eternity for an official yahoo client to implement these features.

[»] unreadably small font
by Andras Keszei - Aug 22nd 2002 03:14:37

I'm using mandrake8.2, and the problem I found was after closing the prog for the 1st time, ym saves a preferences file to /home/bla/.ymessenger, and if this is still present when I restart ymessenger, the fonts in the message are too small to read. There no way to get around this, except erasing the file alltogether. I've tried erasing all the contents, and making it read only, but the fact that there is a text file named preferences in the /home/bla/.ymessenger directory seems to trigger this bug. I've cleaned it off and reinstalled 3x, to no avail.

This is a sort of a known problem. This problem can go away with all or any
    of these solutions

    1. Rename your .ymessenger directory and try
    2. If you are using GNOME, try renaming the .gtkrc file in your home directory or modify the theme to stop forcing non GNOME apps to use GNOME fonts.
    3. If you are in KDE, uncheck the ``Control Center/Look & Feel/System/ Apply Fonts and Colors to non-KDE apps'' option. More details are available from http://www.linux.net.pl/kdesktop/common/#NON-KDE-APPS

    by Prothonotar - Oct 12th 2002 18:40:37

I found that this seems to be caused by a broken libgtkml that the yahoo rpm installs as /opt/ymessenger/lib/libgtkhtml.so.20. They say on their website it is an "un-GNOMEified version". Well, whatever it is, it doesn't work since I installed RH 8.0. /opt/ymessenger/bin/ymessenger is a shell script that puts /opt/ymessenger/lib in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Comment out that line in the script, and you should be alright (assuming that you do, in fact, have the normal gtkhml-1.0.4 package installed)

Login as root and run the command below:

    ln -sf /usr/lib/libgtkhtml.so.20 /opt/ymessenger/lib/libgtkhtml.so.20

This fix the bad libgtkhtml library used by yahoo messenger in /opt/ymessenger/lib. This worked fine in my Mandrake 8.2

For Mandrake 9.1, try this too:

      cd /opt/ymessenger/lib
      rm -f libgtkhtml.so.20*
      ln -s /usr/lib/libgtkhtml-1.1.so.3 libgtkhtml.so.20

Hi,

with the last release 099, I always get the
message "cannot write to /home/yves/.ymessenger"
when I quit the program.
Apart of that it works fine!

Now, is Yahoo planning to add more functionality
to this client ?

I, and surely others would really appreciate voice and webcam support =)

Thanx for this great software, which brings Linux
one little step close to Joe's Desktop

I am facing the same problem, though kyim is not working for me either. The gaim libyahoo uses the CONNECT message and is rejected by the squid. The ymessenger uses the POST message, but does not send the authentication string, and does not pop up the authentication window as in case of a windoze ymessenger.

[»] Won't run on Mandrake 8.2
by Joseph Nicholson - May 14th 2002 17:56:47

Go figure. I sent an email to that tech support thingy regarding what I get on here:

Installing ymessenger as root gives the following error:

[root@localhost Download]# rpm -ivh ymessenger-0.99.17-1.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libcrypto.so.2 is needed by ymessenger-0.99.17-1

(this is the version for Red Hat 7.2).

Creating a symbolic link thus:

ln -s libcrypto.so.0.9.6 libcrypto.so.2

in /usr/lib has no net effect. The program won't run, period. A search of rpmfind.net turns up NOTHING for libcrypto.so.2.
It's part of the libopenssl0 package in Mandrake.

Any solutions? I've tried the .tar.gz file and installed (as user) in $HOME. It won't run from there either, complaining that libcrypto.so.2 can't be found.

Anyone else have any ideas? Yet one more reason why sometimes I HATE proprietary software :(

i did this, and it worked:

1 - get the tarball (listed at the bottom of the download page)

2 - unpack that someplace. it will create a dir named opt (because it expects to be installed to /opt). i don't want an /opt, so i moved opt/ymessenger to /usr/local, creating /usr/local/ymessenger.

    3 - edit .../ymessenger/bin/ymessenger to replace /opt with /usr/local. you'll note that this front-end script messes with LD_LIBRARY_PATH...

    4 - make a symlink from the /usr/lib/libcrypto.so to .../ymessenger/lib/libcrypto.so.2

    5 - add a symlink from .../ymessenger/bin/ymessenger to /usr/local/bin.

6 - important: move away your old $HOME/.ymessenger directory! i couldn't connect until i did...

7 - run ymessenger. since you've just blown away your preferences directory, you'll see a first-time-user wizard. the gnome/kde icon installation didn't work for me, but i don't use them anyway -- just click finish at that point.

8 - don't forget the "show power user settings" in the first preferences tab, which will add an "advanced" tab, under which you can tell ymessneger to use mozilla instead of netscape.

    hope this helps. :-)

    -

doubtless the reason you couldn't get it to work before was that you didn't run ldconfig afterwards so that ld knew about the new link.

You don't really need to do this, but yes, it helps. After logging in, saving your preferences would do the trick. See, ma, I remember what size you want your windows in ;)

Phew, time to really think of that Mandrake release :p

I do, however, have a problem with sound on one box. The user is running KDE, and gets no sound for alerts. My Gnome desktop gave me sound right away, but I've tried her on Gnome and it didn't make a difference.

Needs OSS or /dev/dsp to directly write sounds to. There are some plans for arts compat, but will take time.

Login as root and run the command below:

    ln -sf /usr/lib/libgtkhtml.so.20\ /opt/ymessenger/lib/libgtkhtml.so.20

This fix the bad libgtkhtml library used by yahoo messenger in /opt/ymessenger/lib. This worked fine in my Mandrake 8.2

[»] Irix Implementation of ymessenger

Are you looking at porting ymessenger to Irix 6.5 in the near future? if not is the source code available for compiling on Unix? regards Allison

I dont think ymessenger is open source.. and Yahoo has their hands full just trying to get a Linux version going that has not quite half the features of the windows version. However, if you want to use Yahoo just for chatting, (and dont like the java version) check out the everybuddy client, I dont know if they ported it to Irix, but it is GPLed, so you could give it a good hack if need be.
